Para Bill Evans la responsabilidad de tocar la tónica era del contrabajista:
Si tengo que dedicarme a tocar la tónica, la quinta y todo un voicing, el contrabajo se convierte en un simple metrónomo.
Algunos pianistas lo habÃan puesto en práctica antes que él, por ejemplo Ahmad Jamal o Red Garland. Esta caracterÃstica hacÃa que el sonido de trÃo de Bill Evans fuera un sonido diferente a los demás. Un ejemplo entre decenas: Nardis (Riverside, 1961).
